Attribution Levels
To reflect the many degrees of uncertainty surrounding works attributed to Josquin, we have divided the repertory into six categories. For other composers, with respect to whom the state of the evidence is generally less variable, we use only four levels: 1/2, 3, 4/5, and 6.
| Level | Marker (Josquin) |
Marker |
Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ✓ | none | Secure | As good as we can do given the available evidence |
| 2 | (✓) | none | Slightly less secure | |
| 3 | (?) | (?) | Tricky | Better than even odds |
| 4 | ? | ? | Questionable | Less than even odds |
| 5 | ?? | ? | Doubtful | |
| 6 | ??? | ?? | Very doubtful | Overwhelmingly attributed to another composer |
For a work attributed to two composers, the respective attribution levels are typically 1/6, 2/5, or 3/4, though 3/3 and 4/4 are also possible.
